*A small point of clarification: A tenant in arrears is not a squatter, they are still a tenant entitled to legal protection. However, landlords and development companies often
raise rents extortionately in the knowledge that their tenants will not be able to pay. This can then be used as a pretext for evicting them and
profiteering from the eventual sale of the properties. Those in
such a position will often be denied housing by local authorities and be
unable to rent privately because of the prohibitively high deposits and
rent demanded by private landlords. This leaves them little option but to
squat.*
